What Causes Painful Abdominal Spasms?
Clinical evaluation and examination, investigations to get a cause
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit very short and specific.
Noted the history about painful spasms in upper abdomen - visited a Doctor - tried every antispasmodic - Bentel, Levsin, Sucralfate....
Levsin is Hyoscymine which is antispasmodic and may work if there is spasm of any tubular structure like intestine and ducts.
Please give additional information for me to assist you better:
Since when are the spasms going on?
Any nausea, vomiting?
Bloating of abdomen?
Any constipation, unable to pass gases or loose motions?
ANy other problems like jaundice?
Any investigations done so gar?
The spasms in upper abdomen can be due to the following reasons:
Gall stones in gall bladder or bile ducts.
Small intestinal obstruction.
Colitis of the transverse part of colon.
Pancreatitis
Severe ulcer of stomach or duodenum.
Rare causes like aortic problems, volvulus of stomach.
For getting the most probable cause I would advise you the following:
Clinical evaluation and examination preferably by a General Surgeon.
X-ray of the abdomen in standing position.
Ultrasonography of the whole abdomen.
Tests of blood, stool and urine.
Upper GI Endoscopy if needed.
Further tests as may be needed.
All these can get you the most probable diagnosis and a plan for further management.
You need to get these done asap.
I hope this answer helsp you to get an early proper diagnosis and a proper plan of management.
