What Causes Painful Knees While Bending?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: I fell on my left knee (outside area) about 2 months ago. I have NO pain, i can do gardening, walk up and down stairs, but I cannot kneel down on that knee. If pressure is applied, it's extremely painful. I'm thinking that I may have dislodged something, but the knee does not hurt unless pressure is applied to an area.

Brief Answer:
Consult Orthopedic for locating/ treating pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Knee being the major weight bearing joint in our body, any accident causing knee injury & pain is bound to cause concern.I understand it.

You give history of fall on knee (outer side) 2 months back. It has fortunately not caused major bone/joint fracture. When knees are flexed, the covering skin is stretched & causes pain in the inflamed part.So the pain on kneeling suggests injury to knee & it's surrounding tissues.

You had a fall on outer side of knee.such fall is prone to cause injury/inflammation of-
- the bones ( lateral long bone of leg- fibula/kneecap)
- ligaments supporting lateral side of knee
- tendon of muscle( quadriceps) which holds the knee cap below knee.
- inflammation of bursas of knee joints.
- injury/inflammation of inner knee joint cartilage part (lateral miniscus) which acts as a buffer between two bones

* though you are having pain only while kneeling, it's important to prevent chronic pain /disability by finding exact cause of the pain & manage it with expert advice,

* Investigations like X ray knee joint /CT Scan/ MRI of the region help in pin pointing the causative factor.

* treatment varies from simple anti inflammatory drugs, pain medicines/local steroid injections/physical therapy /surgery depending on the diagnosis.

**I would advice you to consult an Orthopedic surgeon For his expert guidance /advice for investigations & management of the cause.

I hope the answer is informative & useful to you.Any followup query is welcome.
