What Causes Painful Swollen Clitoris Post Child Delivery?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Oct 2014
Question: Hello Doctor, I gave birth vaginally 2 weeks ago. For a week Ive had a sore clitoris and recently noticed it is swollen around the lips as well. It hurts when i get up from sitting or laying down as well as when i go to the toilet. I also noticed a yellow discharge, not a lot though. I saw my gp last week regarding a piles problem as well and really struggling to deal with both conditions. Could you tell me if there could possibly be an infection and what other side effects to look out for? Im seeing my gp on Friday regarding the piles to see if it has improved.

Brief Answer:
Must rule out tears and infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

If you have had some trauma to the labia and the clitoris during the process of labor due to instrumentation or tears, it is possible to have this sort of pain and swelling. Also, if you have had an episiotomy, this is also going to cause some pain.

As the lochia or the discharge after delivery dries up. some altered coloration is usually seen; yet, it is always advisable to have a local exam by a specialist to exclude infection. Maintenance of genital hygiene, intake of plenty of liquids often help.

Hemorrhoids often benefit from increased intake of fresh fruits, vegetables and liquids. In addition, local applications help while bowel evacuation. You can also take laxatives if you are not breast feeding. Sitz baths also help to provide relief. Yoga is useful.
