What Causes Painful Swollen Upper Foot?

default
Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: My upper foot and toes are painful and swollen. The symptoms began while I was taking my usual 3 mile walk. About 2 months ago I walked into a table and hurt a toe. I thought at the time I might have broken it, but the pain eventually went away. I don't know if my present symptoms are related to that injury

Brief Answer:
Your present symptoms are unlikely to be related to 2 months old injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query, I concluded that your pain is unlikely to be related to 2 months old injury as there was pain free period in between injury and these symptoms.

It may be related to some strain during your usual 3 mile walk. Elevation of foot over pillow during resting period and sleep will of help. Rest for few days and avoid long walking will help. Active toe movements will help in reducing swelling. For pain relief you can continue with Advil which you are already taking.

I wanted to know whether your both feet are swollen or swelling is only on one foot. Furthermore you can get x ray of foot to look for cause.

You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.

I have pain in just one foot. I have one additional question: In 5 days I am going on a flight which will take approximately 3.5 hours. Will air travel exacerbate my problem? I know dragging my foot through an airport won't be fun!

Brief Answer:
During flight some increase in swelling is likely to occur.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome back

I have gone through your question and follow up question in detail and understand your concern.

You have swelling and pain in one foot means it is not due to systemic (general causes such as heart and kidney disease) cause.

You have a flight of approximately 3.5 hours in 5 days. During this times probably your foot will be dependent(lower as compared to your body) during flight, so some increase in swelling will occur. It can be reduced by keeping foot elevated on pillow after flight.

You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
