What Causes Palpitations When Suffering From Anemia?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I am a 39 year old female; 5'10", 145 lb in good general health, but I do have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I had a cbc test performed as part of a physical, and it returned a hemolobin level of 10.7. My PCP had another cbc run along with ferritin, serum iron, folate and b-12 about 12 days after the first test. Hemoglobin is now 9.8, ferritin 11, iron 179, folate >20 and b12 is 631. I have been having anemia symptoms for the last several months. Most of these symptoms are very similar to the hypothyroid symptoms, but additionally I have been getting dizzy easily and feeling heart palpitations. I am wondering if there is something else I should be asking the doctor to look at.

Brief Answer:
Please, can you upload the CBC results in full?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this hypothyroidism and the the recent anemia. I will like to see the complete CBC sheet as there is so much more information that can help orient towards the cause of your anemia.

Your results are grossly normal. However, ferritin, which is the storage form of iron is low. This may be suggestive of iron deficiency anemia. Have you been having any irregular bleeding or blood loss that may explain iron deficiency anemia?

Palpitations are typical of anemia but not hypothyroidism. However, there is a great overlap in the symptoms of these two diseases. are you being treated already for the hypothyroidism? Also, are you receiving any medications for the anemia?

For now, I will like to get the complete results of the CBC. This will be very helpful to me. I will want to make more definitive suggestions when I get this information. I will be right here to respond to you as soon as you get it uploaded.

I wish you well. Waiting to hear from you!

I uploaded the bloodwork from last week. I was just prescribed iron. I am being treated for the hypothyroid issue, currently taking Synthroid.
Thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this follow up precision.

I have reviewed your reports fully. This is conclusive of iron deficiency anemia. I am happy to know your doctor has already started you on iron and vitamin C treatment.

The next question to answer is what is the cause? Poor nutrition? Bleeding? etc. These would be very helpful to prevent future problems. Ask your doctor what other findings suggest as a possible cause.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and fee free to ask for more informationa nd clarifications if need be.
