What Causes Passing Of Gas Through Penis?
Question: For the past several weeks, (pre- and post- lumbar surgery), I have been experiencing a lot of air escaping through my penis after a normal or urgent urination stream. This has never happened ever before and concerns me. Its like an air bubble voiding from my bladder or a "penis fart". Comments?

There are two possibilities of gas in the urine.
1. Diabetes and bacterial infection of the urinary tract. Due to specific bacteria presence in the urine which digest glucose gas is produced (as a part of chemical reaction). You may have frequent urinating, burning while urinating, lower abdominal pain, fever with this issue.
2. Connection between the large intestine and the bladder. It may happen due to large intestine cancer (sigmoid colon or rectal cancer) when the tumor grows on the bladder and connects both organs. Such connection can be also present due to diverticulitis and a perforation of diverticules. In case of bladder-intestine connection you should have recurring urinary tract infections and obscure urine.
I suggest you to start with urine analysis and glucose level check. In case of diabetes and infection you should have treated both conditions.
As you are over the age of 50 colonoscopy should be done even if diabetes and infection will be present.
