What Causes Persistent Cough And Wheezing When Diagnosed With IBS?

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Oct 2016
Question: I am a little concerned as I feel I am breathless a lot of the time. This only came on about 10 days ago. I have had what I think was symptoms of IBS as I was diagnosed quite a few years ago ( I do not suffer badly)
it started with excessive wind, and the odd stomach ache, I still have the persistant wind but it is a little better.
What worried me is this feeling of breathlessness that came on over a week ago. I went to the GP on Monday, she checked blood pressure, listened to my chest and checked my oxygen levels with the little thing that goes on your finger. She also asked if I was anxious about anything , but I am not aware of any anxiety or stress in my life. Just worrying about the breathing. \my husband had a health scare 3 years ago where they found nodules in his lungs after a persistant cough, he was monitord for 3 years and is fine (it was NOT lung cancer!) As I looked everything up to do with Lung cancer, I now worry about myself and am concerned that it could be something more serious like cancer or a pulmonary embolism!! Are there other symptoms that would present with either of these? I feel a little stupid and would like some advice. I am 49 years old and have always been healthy.

Brief Answer:
It could be a temporary thing or allergy.

Detailed Answer:

Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

I would like to know:
1. If you have a cough or wheez when you experience breathing difficulty? Wheez is a whistling sound that comes while breathing.

2. Do you have any allergies?

3. Are you a smoker?

4. Are you anxious as also asked by your doctor?

5. Did you suffer from any cold like symptoms or chest infection recently.

This may be a temporary thing and may pass of soon or it could be allergy causing it.

It does not look like lung cancer or embolism. Lung cancer is common in smokers and often presents with chronic cough and blood in sputum. For embolism also setting is different, mostly seen in people confined to bed and not ambulatory. May also be seen in women on OCPs.

However if breathlessness persists you have to consult a pulmonologist and undergo a complete examination including a chest xray and PFT.

I hope this answers your query.

Hi there, thank you.

Do not have a cough or a wheeze

I have hayfever

smoke but very little (about 5 per week)

\I wasn't anxious when it come on, but a feel a little anxious now.

No colds or chest infections

I would class myself as quite heathly. Not overweight, I weigh 9 stone and am 5ft 4"

No tightness or pain in chest

I can breathe fine through my nose but keep feeling the need to take a large inhale. I will go back to GP if it persists but didn't want to worry in the process about it being an embolism or cancer. Find it hard to accept anxiety as I was really fine before and have not been worrying.

thank you XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
In view of history of hay fever it could be allergy.

Detailed Answer:

With a history of hay fever it goes more in favour of allergy and your symptoms appear pretty mild. You may get a PFT done.

If discomfort is more you may take a tablet of montair lc daily. And yes if you have excess gastric acid secretion you may also take a pantodac daily as excess gastric acid reflux can cause cough and breathing difficulty.

Take care.
