What Causes Persistent Pain On Left Side Of Chest When I Lay Down?

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: I have been having chest pain all day, mostly to the left side. It came on suddenly and gets better when I'm lying down. The pain is also in my upper back. I don't feel nauseous and am not lacking energy.
I do not have any health problems that I know of, I do smoke though.
Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
it seems to be due to gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.
After reading your post, it seems that your symptoms can be due to gastritis.
You can take an antacid like Omeprazole 40mg once a day before meals along with Domperidone 30mg for relief from your symptoms.
Following precautions may be helpful :-
1. Avoid spicy and oily foods.
2. Avoid being empty stomach for long periods.
3. Avoid mental and emotional stress.
4. Avoid smoking and alcohol.
5. Avoid gas producing foods like peas, cabbage, legumes, etc.
6. Drink lots of water daily.

A clinical evaluation by a Cardiologist and an ECG may be helpful in planning further medical management.
I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further query, I will be happy to help.
Thanks.

Thank you very much for your reply, I do feel a bit more at ease.
What worries me is any sort of hearth condition. I have no reason to have any problems despite the fact that I'm a relatively heavy smoker.
What bothers me the most is that the chest pain is located mostly around the left side, I'm scared that it could indicate hearth problems. I'm living in Peru, doing volunteer work here and good medical facilities are hard to come across, also quiet costly.
As I wrote in my first question; the pain is mostly located around the left side of my chest (in my opinion around the hearth region), it goes away when I'm lying down but increases dramatically when I get up. It is also mostly to the left side of my upper back region.
So, just be clear; you would not immediately associate this with heart problems or label me as somebody at risk of having a hearth tack?

Brief Answer:
heavy smoking can damage heart function.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for providing more information.
Heavy smoking is an important trigger factor for heart attacks. So I would advise that a Cardiac evaluation is needed.
You can take the medicines mentioned in my earlier post. They will help you if you are having gastritis as the cause of your symptoms.
Also avoid smoking as it causes damage to both heart and stomach in addition to the lungs.
I hope this answers your query. If you have any further doubts, please mention.
Thanks.

I think this answers my questions and I will consider getting a cardiac evaluation. My hope is that the symptoms go away overnight and that I can simply continue my work without seeking immediate medical care. As I said, it is not easy at the moment for me to find a clinic or hospital that can help me and I’ll be here for several more months. Stopping smoking is hard since it’s an addiction but it’s certainly something I’ll consider.
Well, my questions have been asked and I have my answer. I just hope the pain subsides on its own and that it was just a scare, nothing to worry too much about. Honestly, if I got a heart attack now there would not be much I could do. I’m more than an hour away from any medical facility.
But having described what I’m feeling (chest pain on the left side that has endured for almost 10 hour now, this with equally constricting upper back pain), you do not think I’m at risk of simply having a heart attack in the middle of the night.
I just need to know that after describing my symptoms you do not think I should up and leave now (middle of the night) and seek out a cardiologist. Basically you're saying that I should be fine and should seek out specialist medical care in the future or if these symptoms still remain for example tomorrow morning.

Brief Answer:
you may observe your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
As already mentioned you may take the medicines mentioned earlier. If you get relief from your symptoms, it means that your symptoms are not heart related but are due to gastritis.
Follow the precautions mentioned before.
I wish you good health.
Thanks.
