What Causes Persistent Shortness Of Breath After Treating Strep Pneumonia?

Question: I'm a 62 year old female recovering from having a total right knee implant. My initial one of 13 years got infected when I came down with strep pneumonia almost one year ago. I have gone from being wheelchair bound, to being able to get around short distances with a 4 prong cane, & at home except for stairs I can navigate without assistance, but I do go slowly. I am also using a rollator for longer distances when I leave my house. I'm currently receiving physical therapy. And in spite of doing all of the exercises, I still find that my strength & endurance is not what it should be. I tire very easily, & get short of breath. I also note that I still have edema of both feet and ankles. I am on lasix which helps some & I also use a rescue inhaler. I was hoping to go back to work in January, but am not really sure that I could endure a 12 hour shift. I do not think my current problems are related to my surgury, although my overall endurance wasn't helped by this. Where should I start? Should I consult the surgeron (who still has to give me a note to "clear me for work"), my family doctor who I see regularly, or my pulmonologist?. I was wondering if this could also be cardiac. (no pain, just shortness of breath & fatigue). Any suggestions? Thank you.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.I think it is not related to your surgery. This is most likely due to lung condition. Second possibility of heart disease. So you are advised to consult pulmonologist and cardiologist. I will also advise to get your Hb test. Vitamins and trace elements supplements will be helpful in recovery. You can discuss with your doctor about it.
Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.
Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
