What Causes Persistent Sore Throat Despite Taking Medication?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: Last Tuesday, Dec 27th, I felt my throat was getting sore. I went to see a doctor the next day. He did not take a culture, but he could see my throat was really red and prescribed both tamiflu to rule out flu and the generic form of Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulante) to take care of strep.

Over the weekend my throat was not getting better. I noticed on Monday a large sore in the back of my throat, not on the tonsils, but on the side. Not pus sacs, but rather it looked like a canker sore. I was gargling with hydrogen peroxide and warm salt water, but at this time my throat feels really dry and still hurts quite a bit when i swallow food. The Hydrogen Peroxide seems to have dried out or burned my throat a bit. Feels very weird. Probably the wrong move to be gargling with too much of that. Anyhow, my question is what do you suggest I do at this juncture?

Much thanks.

Brief Answer:
may be auto immune glosso stomatitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query.

As per your history, treatment of sore throat with Amoxicillin and Clavulunic acid for 5 to 7 days is correct. Hydrogen peroxide gargle would have worsened the soreness or the infection which was may be partially cured, or there might be auto immune glosso stomatitis.

Well at this moment, I'd suggest further clinical evaluation (preferably by ENT) and treatment accordingly. Empirically you can take anti inflammatory medicines like Paracetamol tablet and steroid cream- Triamicilone local application.

Hope my answers have helped you.
Please feel free to ask in case there's any further queries.
Thanks.
