What Causes Persistent Swelling In Leg While Recovering From Cellulitis?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: My wife's legs have cleared up some from the cellulitis infection but still remain swollen (the redness has gone away and she has completed the antibiotics ). She is scheduled to undergo verteboplasty on Li and T12 and possibly T11 but the Dr says to wait 2 more weeks to make sure infection is clear. We think it should be done right away as her legs were swollen as much the last time she had the procedure on L2 ans L3.

Brief Answer:
It is better to wait for 2 weeks than have an immediate surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Your wife has a history of infection recently. Even if the infection has subsided and the redness has gone away, we have to be sure before surgery that the infection has completely gone away.
In case any infection persists it can cause an infection of the surgical wound causing failure of the spine procedure. It is best to wait for 2 weeks and be very sure that the infection has subsided. Meanwhile her body will also get enough time to recover with rest and diet.
I hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
Cellulitis is treated with antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Cellulitis happens due to bacterial infection of the subcutaneous tissues. Broad spectrum antibiotics are the only treatment for it.
It is the most likely cause of leg swelling in your wife's case. Swelling of the legs can also be caused by congestive heart failure, kidney disease, arthritis, high altitude, high salt intake and any blood clot in the veins causing DVT.
Hope my answer is helpful.

The wife has been tested for all the above (quite recently this year) and her leg swelling started before the cellulitis

Brief Answer:
Can be due to lack of exercise and inactivity.

Detailed Answer:
In that case the swelling can be due to lack of physical activity. The lack of proper drainage of blood from the legs causes the fluid to accumulate. Local inflammation can also cause the swelling.
