What Causes Pink Brown Discharge After Having Intercourse?

Posted on Tue, 29 Apr 2014
Question: Hello doctor, I am a 24 years old female. My date of birth is 27th July, 1990. I had unprotected insertion of penis on 5th April, 2014. It was not sexual intercourse. It was the first time I had penis insertion but was half way. However, fingering and penis rubbing on the vaginal surface was common during that time. Today, that is 6th April, I noticed some pink brown discharge from my vagina. My period is due on 12th April. The experience was painful as I never had sex. I am worried if I could be pregnant. I don't have any other pregnancy symptoms. It's just the duscharge that is freaking me out. Please give your valuable advice on this. What precautions do I have to follow if in case I am pregnant. Thank you.

Brief Answer: Do not worry. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome XXXXXXX I am Dr Madhuri, a consultant gynecologist and will be helping you. Insertion of penis irrespective of protection is intercourse. The main issue is if there was an ejaculation and semen was deposited inside. If this was not done then chances of pregnancy are extremely low. The chances of pregnancy are more from day 10-20 in a regular 28 days cycle. So please check which day it was. It may have just been the ending of fertile period so again chances are lower. The brown discharge occurs due to bleeding coming from the hymen or vaginal walls during the initial few times after initiating an active sexual life. As long as it is not excessive or foul smelling there is no need to worry. Just clean the vulva with warm water containing a few drops of dettol [ gently and only a few drops in a big mug] and keep it dry to avoid infection. Pregnancy symptoms do not come until a week after the missed period in most women and never come in a day after sex. So this cannot be a guide for us. However as of now, since the episode was unprotected, it is best to use an emergency contraceptive pill, [ I pill, or plan B one step] one tablet within 72 hours of the sex. If it is a 2 tablet pack, then the first tablet must be taken within 72 hours and the second 12 hours after the first. It protects in more than 95% cases and up to 97% if used early. In your case since the insertion was partial and most likely there was no release of sperms, you are already at a lower risk and I pill will be an additional precaution. The pill may cause an irregular period for one or two cycles. So please do not worry. I pill can still be used. If the periods are delayed for more than 3 weeks from 5 th April, that is do not occur till 25th April then get a pregnancy test. Most likely this will not be needed and you will have a period before that. Also for the future, please use a contraceptive [ condoms are best as they also protect against sexually transmitted diseases] if possible to avoid any pregnancies. Use of I pills is not recommended as a routine method and is not to be used at all for more than once in one cycle. So do not worry, just take emergency contraceptive pill. Hope this satisfies your query. Thanks for using HCM. Feel free to ask any more questions that you may have. Dr Madhuri Bagde Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist

Thank you doctor. I would also like to mention that I did not have my period last month. It was just brown discharge the whole time during my last period session. It wasn't a regular period. I never had any sexual activity before. This was my very first sexual activity that I mentioned above. I have always been regular on my periods. Don't know what caused the period to skip last month. The discharge that I am getting at present is same as I got last month during mt expected cycle.

Brief Answer: detailed explanation given below. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome back, So now as the history is a bit changed we must think of other reasons for discharge apart from hymenal or vaginal bleed. Other reasons for discharge are hormonal imbalances, stress, ovarian cysts and cervical polyps. Of these hormones and polyps are the commonest ones. However polyps do not cause an altered period. So if it is a similar discharge, you will need to see your doctor and get an examination. You will also need an ultrasound to look for cysts. They are mostly functional cysts that tend to disappear on their own. Sometimes polycystic ovaries also produce similar symptoms and can be diagnosed by ultrasound. Even hormonal imbalances are mostly minor ones and are cured if one follows a healthy diet low in fat and sugars and rich in fruits and vegetables, regular exercise and yoga and decreasing stress. All these help to tone the system and restore any minor hormonal imbalances. There are two option at present. 1. Wait for 2-3 months, try lifestyle modification and then see how the periods behave. 2. Visit a gynecologist now and get evaluated. Please choose the option that suits you the best. If you are too stressed better get examined. Do not worry. The causes are fairly common and treatable. I am always here to help you if needed so feel free to ask any more queries. Dr Madhuri

Hello Doctor, When I woke up today in the morning I noticed bleeding. There are fresh blood patches on my underwear. And I am experiencing bleeding since then. Is this my period? Should I still go with the I pill? I have to purchase it from a drug store.

Brief Answer: I pill is not recommended now Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome back, Since you do not have regular periods and have only brown discharge during your period it is difficult to say. As of now, I suggest that you just observe the bleeding. If this time it bleeds like a normal period, then there is no worry. If the bleeding is less [ just the brown discharge], but since it is coming just 2 days after contact it cannot be implantation bleed or bleed due to attachment of baby to the uterus. This again decreases the chance of a pregnancy. But in this case an additional precaution would be to get a urine pregnancy test done after 3 weeks that is after 25th. If it is negative there is no worry. From your description it seems more like a period and so I pill will not be needed now. So please do not worry. Just wait and watch this and the next few periods and try the lifestyle measures. If the irregular bleed persists then get an evaluation. The contact was just at the end of fertile period so chance of pregnancy is very low and you are also having bleeding which make it almost zero if the bleeding is adequate. Even if it is not, my experience says that pregnancy seems less likely. So, please do not worry. I understand that you are concerned. But there is no need for a lot of concern now if there is bleeding. I am always here for any further help. Take care. Dr Madhuri

It is bleeding heavily doctor. Just as it happens during my regular periods. I have acute abdominal pain, cramps, blood clots and fresh blood bleeding. I think it's my normal period. I did not get my last one as normal and this time it happened 5 days early. Thank you for your guidance and advice Doctor. Thanks a lot.
