What Causes Poor Nail Growth?
Question: I have lost my finger nails the past 6 yrs a few have grown back but four have not they are. Tender and the cuticles are always red and puffy I have been to Iowa city with no avail and I don't know we're. Else to go to ?! Do I have some type of parasite?
Brief Answer:
I need to have a look at your finger nails first....
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I understand your concern.
Can you send a photo of your finger nails so I can evaluate the changes there?
If finger nails are not well grown, then, there must be problems with local blood circulation and possible infection (fungal/bacterial infection) or inflammatory problems like psoriasis. Apart local treatment, oral therapy is also recommended...
However, I need to have a look at your finger nails first before running into final conclusions.
Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Skin/nail scrapping examination required...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear XXXXXXX
Thank you for providing the requested photos.
I was going through them and noted the nails are damaged the and the skin is also involved.
From.what I have seen it seems fungal infection to me. However, immediate examination of 10% skin and nail scrapping under microscope is recommended
The result will be taken within a day.
This test is necessary in order to determine/rule out fungal infection
Stop taking any cream the night before you will go for the skin scrapping test.
Antibiotics cream will aggravate your current problems.
If confirmed, fungal infection should be treated with local gentian violet XXXXXXX and antifungal cream ( terbinafin, clotrimazole). Oral treatment should be also started with terbinafin or fluconazole for at least 3 months.
Skin will get healed faster than the nails. After skin will be corrected and restructured, should start therapy to regenerate the nails with nail liquor containing cyclopyrox. A few months will be needed to get fully recovered.
Please ask for the skin scrapping test to your doctor as soon as possible.
Hope this helps.
