What Causes Poor Weight Gain In An Infant?

Posted on Thu, 18 May 2017
Question: Hello.. I'm blessed with baby boy two weeks ago. Pre term baby, he born on 35-5 day. His weight is 2.379 at time of born and now he weighs around 2.4.

He is having mothers milk and very occasionally bottle milk (lactose) as per my doctor advise. And my doctor says it is good to have more than 2.5kgs, but the baby boy is always sleeping :) and milk intake is very less. Bit worried about this, could you please help me to enable my kid to have sufficient amount of milk intake as well is 2.4kgs weight is fine for the 15 days baby ?

Brief Answer:
For a baby with birthweight of 2.379, 2.4kg at 15 days is perfect

Detailed Answer:
Hi... Greetings from XXXXXXX

I understand your concern. Usually newborn babies lose around 10% of the body weight and regain it by 10 to 14 days of life. A baby born with the birth weight of 2.379 having a weight of 2.4kg by 15 days is doing well. Don't worry.

I suggest you stop bottle feeding and feed the baby only exclusive breastfeeding.

We can recheck the weight by 1 month of age.

If the baby is passing urine 4times a day, that's 6th hourly once, then this means that the mother's milk itself is sufficient.

But my Pediatrician herself asked us to feed bottle milk to baby twice or thrice a day to get proper weight gain!

I'm confused whether to go with your opinion or her one !? :)

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on exclusive breastfeeding and baby's weight gain

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I will tell you certain facts to keep you more informed.

If....

1. While feeding the baby in one breast, mother is feeling heaviness in other breast.

2. While feeding the baby in one breast, milk is dripping in occassional drops from the other breast.

3. Baby is passing adequate amount of urine 6th hourly once, that is totally 4 times a day.

4. Gaining 25 grams per day.

Then the baby doesn't require top feeding or bottle feeding.

Please get back to me based on the above facts, if anything is missing.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
