What Causes Pressure And Stiffness In Head?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: Hello,
I have experienced a sensation of pressure and stiffness in my head above both ears on and off for a few weeks. I don't usually have it in the morning, it tends to start during the day e.g. if I chew a chewing gum, if I apply pressure to the side of the head e.g. by wearing sunglasses on top of the head or driving down a hill or laying on my stomach. It got better for a couple of weeks and now it is back again. It is not painful or a headache, just uncomfortable. I am seeing a doctor tomorrow, I am just wandering what it might be? Could it be an inner ear infection? I am terrififed of brain tumours. Could it come from the back? It did start shortly after I had a bad back, however, my back has been fine for a long time now. I have had some ear issues the last few years, and it did 'bubble'a bit in the ear just then. I never used to get ear infections, however, now I get them every now and then. Rarely need treatment, they go away, however, a few years ago I found out I had had a chronic ear infection for about a year and I had no idea I had it...anyways, I have never experienced this head pressure in my life and I am not prone to headaches. Thank You.Kind Regards XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Tumors very unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Regarding to your symptoms, two most possible conditions that may cause them are:
- Temporomandibulary joint dysfunction related pain,
- temporal arteritis ( autoimmune inflamation of temporal arteries).

These conditions need further evaluation by clinical examination, blood tests and imaging tests as well, to be confirmed or excluded.

Those symptoms and your age are very unlikely to be related to tumors.

Furthermore are not related to any back problem.

Hope this helps. Best regards.
