Psoriasis - presentation and treatment options
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us
I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query an i have noted your concern.
Psoriasis is an immune mediated disease. It is characterised by thick scaly plaques involving various body sites and sometimes joint pains and joint swelling. Psoriatic plaques may involve any body site but they characteristically involve the scalp, extensor aspect of extremities, lower back. Face is usually spared. Nail involvement in the form of pitting, subungual hyperkeratosis and deformity is also part of psoriasis.
Psoriasis may remit and relapse. Factors like infection, drugs, pregnancy and stress seem to provoke exacerbations. Psoriasis is more common in winters.
Treatment of psoriasis includes topical steroids with salicylic acid ointment, topical vitamin D analogues like calcipotriol, coal tar with salicylic acid ointment and dithranol. Topical treatment alone suffices for limited disease.
For widespread disease oral methorexate, phototherapy, acitretin, cyclosporine, biologicals may also be combined with topical treatment.

Is this a communicable disease. One of my friend has got a marriage proposal from a psoriasis patient. Can she go ahead with the proposal?
psoriasis is not communicable
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Psoriasis is not communicable. Though there is a slightly increased risk of psoriasis in children of parents who have psoriasis. This risk is more if both the parents have psoriasis as compared to the risk in chilfren of single affected parent. However, the underlying fact is that most of the patients of psoriasis do not have a family history.
Hope this helps
