What Causes Purple Spots On Buttocks?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Nov 2015
Question: Today I woke up with a few purple spots on the left right side of my butt cheek. It's about 5 of them, bruise-like looking. They are flat, not painful and not itchy. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
They seem to be either due to purpura or mosquito bite

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the details and have checked the attached images. Information on whether the spots are blanching, would have been helpful. The spots could have occurred due to two causes:
* If they are non blanching, they are more likely to be purpuric spots which could occur due to low platelet count. If that is the case, be on the lookout for any bleeding tendency. If you find any bleeding, visit the ER without delay.
* They could also be due to some insect bite. However, in such a case itchiness was likely and some antiallergic like cetirizine should have been helpful.

I would insist you not to worry. Check if the spots increase in number or size.

Hope that helped. Let me know if you have any other query and I would be glad to help.

Regards

What do you mean by blanching?

And what kind of bleeding tendency? Around the area?

Brief Answer:
Sorry for not being able to respond earlier.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond earlier. Blanching means that the colour goes away when pressed and returns when the pressure is removed.
Platelets are responsible for the capacity of the blood clotting in case ever there is any bleeding due to any reason. If the platelet count comes down and if there is some bleeding from somewhere(not necessarily from around the area) due to some reason, the capacity of the bleeding to stop might be reduced. Hence my asking you to be cautious. (That does not mean that you need to be anxious.)
