What Causes Radiating From Hip Towards Legs?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Jan 2015
Question: For more than a month, when I lay down on my right side, pain will start at the hip and go down my leg (does not affect my foot) I take two Gabapentin, 100 mg. each, at night for pain.
Yesterday, the pain is no longer only at night or only in my hip/upper thigh. Now, if I touch the back of my shin, any pressure on it can cause pain. I am getting worried.

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis of hip and stress injury leg

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Pain at the hip - osteoarthritis of the hip needs to be evaluated.

2.Recent onset of shin pain - Possibly small stress fractures (due to reduced bone mineral density), due to altered walking method ( due to osteoarthritis of hip), calf muscle weakness and stamping method of walking causing pain in the shin. Possible stress injury to leg.

3. Osteoarthritis of hip requires X-ray for confirmation. NSAID painkillers like celecoxib, muscle strengthening and physiotherapy could be helpful. If severe, hip replacement surgery maybe necessary.

4. For Stress injury to leg, calf strengthening exercises, slow movements (avoiding stamping movements), calcium supplements and correction of gait (walking style) should be helpful.

5. Pain disturbing at night is severe, meet your doctor immediately for further tests, evaluation and medication/ treatment.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
