What Causes Raised Billirubin Level?
FYI- I am on anti-hypertensive medicine-listril 5mg since the last 7-8 years.Prior to that from 2000 I was on 2.5mg. I take Shelcal 500 mg every day.
I am amoderate drinker and smoker - drink around 3 days a week and at times I can go on for days without smoking.
I travel around 10-12 days a month.
My LDL has been in the range of 112-115 since the last 12-14 years.
I try to hit the gym at least 5 days a week- treadmill I do for around 45-60 minutes - at 8.5 kms average speed. I also do some floor exercises as well as some weights.
If you see my report - My bilirubin Indirect ( 0.85)and Bilirubin Total ( 1.05)are raised. As also the Lymphocytes/ MCV and MCHC needs your attention.
Kindly adivse
Gilbert's Syndrome Is a possibility.
Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir.
I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern. Your indirect bilirubin is slightly raised. This can be due to Gilbert's Syndrome which is congenital absence of an enzyme in the body. This is a harmless condition. Nothing to worry at all.
Your liver enzymes (ALT and AST) are normal. This signifies that mild rise in indirect bilirubin is absolutely harmless.
Now let's come to your lymphocytes count. This is a part of total leukocyte count. This can be slightly high which can occur due to recent past viral infection. This would settle on itself. Since the total leukocyte count is normal so this variation is acceptable.
Your MCV and MCHC signifies that you might be having slight iron deficiency in your body. I am saying slight because your hemoglobin is normal. If you want to be sure you can get following tests
done:
1. Serum Ferritin.
2. Serum Iron.
3. Total Iron Binding Capacity.
However, you may simply increase green leafy vegetables in diet. You can take the advantage of the winter season by eating seasonal vegetables like Spinach.
As far as your LDL is concerned, it is your alcohol and smoking that is actually affecting it. Since you do exercise , you just need to further cut down on alcohol and smoking. I wouldn't advise you to go beyond 60 ml/week of hard drink.
Avoid oil, potato, rice in diet.
If possible use olive oil as cooking oil.
Get your lipid profile repeated after 3 months once you start following all this.
I am hopeful that your LDL will improve.
Overall , your reports are good.
Nothing to worry.
Follow healthy lifestyle.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
Will follow as far as LDL is concerned. My only query is - Can Gilbert''s syndrome set in at a later stage since you said it is congenital.
Prior to this I never had a Bilirubin level ( Total/Direct/Indirect ) higher or to be more specific slighly higher than the reference range.
Also any specific medicine to bring the BILIRUBIN level down or any special diet except that I knowof which is water melon/ curd with turmeric or honey with neem leaves ( correct me if I am wrong)???
Just need a clarity on the above.
Rest will follow up with Blood Tests after 2-3 months and revert back to you.
Kind Regards
You can take Fenugreek seeds for cholesterol.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome back
Gilbert's Syndrome can present at any point in life. Moreover, it is not essential that you have it. I have just kept a possibility. You can get a repeat LFT after a month. Also get Hepatitis B and C checked as a part of routine checkup along with LFT.
None of the home remedies you have mentioned are well known to help in Gilbert's. This is a self limiting condition. Also it is a myth that turmeric consumption will increase the jaundice levels.
You can consume everything. Just avoid Pain killers. Alcohol as discussed.
However, you can definitely look for Fenugreek (methi ) seeds. They are very helpful in controlling cholesterol.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay healthy.
Kind Regards
Good Luck.
