What Causes Rash With Small Bumps On Penis?

Posted on Tue, 3 Feb 2015
Question: Hello

2 days ago I woke up and around my penis was very moist and oily, so I wiped it and it got really dry and looked like a rash with some bumps on it. what could it be? I didn't take a shower before, but since then I started taking a shower and started to apply skin lotion on it to relieve the itching. Some people tells me that it could be fungal Infection and some would say it could be herpes. Right now it doesn't hurt anymore, I have been putting lotion on it, and it seems to have calm down. If it was genital herpes, could it take for it to heal up in 2 days? it doesn't look like herpes to me but i want input to it. it doesn't look like a pimple more like a rash red dry bumps. I shave my pubic hair and it located around the base of my penis. thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
Sounds fungal, unlikely herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
From your description this sounds like a yeast/fungal infection. You can buy over the counter anti-fungal medications that should clear this up quickly.

Herpes rashes are blister type rashes that are very painful. They take 1-2 weeks to resolve and cause a lot of pain. Herpes does not sound likely from what you describe.

It is also possible that you have a folliculitis which is common around hair follicles in people that shave pubic hair. Folliculitis is more of a pimple type rash. I think a mild yeast infection is most likely. If it has not completely cleared up then buy some anti-fungal cream and apply that to the area twice a day until it resolves.

Good health to you.

Thank you for the reply.
In your opinion what type of anti-fungal medication that best works?
Also at first it was really irritating and feels burning, itchy and dryness around the red bumps. So you think it is a fungal infection? I don't see any blister like what herpes would look like. I don't have any pain during urination and is it true that genital herpes would hurt for weeks?

Brief Answer:
Lamisil (terbinafine)

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your follow up. Terbinafine is the best anti-fungal for getting rid of fungal infections quickly. Others that may also work just fine are tinactin and clotrimazole. Yes, herpes infections can be very painful for weeks. Small itchy bumps are most frequently fungal. Have a good day.
