Question: Hi. I had a colostomy 8weeks ago and have rectal discharge 24/7. I have had 2 illeo's before (colo/rectal cancer) the reversal never did work out . Many embarrassing accidents later went in for a colostomy. Rectal discharge is crazy. Never had them with the illieo's. What say you? Thanks.

Brief Answer: hi and welcome Detailed Answer: As you probably already know, this isnormal to have rectal discharge after colostomy since remaining colon secretes mucous and fluids. so every patient has discharge. It can be more or less often and more or less liquid. It may be problematic if it becomes more firm and forms plugs which can be painful. Also, during the time rectal discharge become less frequent so you should be patient bit more till digestion and bowel function stabilize. Colon epitel will become atrophic and it will secrete less mucous in several months. Sometimes glycerin suppositoriums ca help to make discharge thinner and it will be easier evacuated. Wish you good health.feel free to ask. Regards
