What Causes Recurrent Kidney Stones?
Question: Male - 26yrs
First kidney stone - left side - 6 months ago
Since then, I have restricted my fluid intake to large amounts of water, and 2-3 beers daily
Some dull pain in left kidney area any day after consumed more than 1 beer, would subside if I refrained from drinking alcohol. History of heart palpitations and arrhythmia
10 days ago had company party and consumed large amount of beer - around 10 drinks - only water/cranberry juice since thank night
Since that day I have noticed strange symptoms. Random dull aches in kidney area (primarily on left side, now some on both), sometimes momentary sharp/mild pain in kidney area and other random places of abdomen and back.
2 days ago, driving home from work, and felt discomfort in chest (heart rate/palpitations) and later experienced a period of extreme lethargy to the point of almost feeling drunk. Same day noticed sensation of swelling or feeling fatter around small of back, as if I had grown love handles during the day. Weird sensations from this area, including stiffness in lower back, mild aches, very mild numbness. General bloated feeling has gone on now for last 4-5 days and overall feeling of being "fatter" in stomach and around belt area, which is something I have never experienced before.
2 days last week, urine had strong odor and a more yellow color than usual, even while consuming lots of water. This symptom has not returned. I feel that urination schedule/quantity and bowel movements are "normal".
I am in an "oil boom town." Medical care here has been poor in past. I have not found a GP out here yet, as they are difficult to get in and see due to the overcrowding of the town. Is this worth a trip to the Urgent Care Clinic? What tests to run or areas to look at?
Brief Answer:
can be a repeat stone
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
It looks like you are having a recurrent stone, and this stone most likely has slipped down and stuck in the ureter and blocking it leading to swelling of that kidney (hydronephrosis).
Also bear is a diuretic so it increase the hydronephrosis and causes pain. It also has high calorie, leading to weight gain.
I would advice you to stop intake of bear and get an ultrasound of your abdomen to look for the stone.
Till then you may take painkillers for pain, but get the scan done at the earliest.
Hope i had been helpful.
