What Causes Recurrent Rash On Back Of Neck?

default
Posted on Sat, 14 Feb 2015
Question: For the last nine months I've had a recurrent rash of pimples (of some sort - its not acne) on the back of my neck. You can feel when they develop - there is a hardened mass under skin that gets itchier as it forces itself towards the surface. At a certain point the itch is terrific and I have to squeeze it out to get some relief. Usually a steam of clear fluid comes out, sometimes blood. Then usually a crust, followed by a scab, will develop. But the problem is that time and again the same thing happens elsewhere on the neck or with a previous "pimple". Some of them last 4 months before they healed completely, the same one erupting again and again on the way, and meanwhile others come up elsewhere. Nothing I've tried clears it up in the sense of full healing and prevention of recurrence. I've topical tried hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, various over the counter anti-bacterial creams for "pimples", tea tree and oregano oils. They do give relief, and in some cases they seemed to facilitate earlier healing, but then when one pimple is finished, another will erupt. I'm 66, have never had this problem previously in my life, and suspect that I may have got infected from a clipper at a barber. There also seems to be cycles in the itchiness. Sometimes for whole parts of the day you can't feel anything (unless a scab is at the typical itchy stage); the worst periods for itchiness are late afternoon / early evening, or after rising in the morning. They don't appear to be classic boils, since the "puss" is clear watery fluid, not yellow and thick etc. Thank you for your time. Appreciatively Yours, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Sydney Australia

Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
From the description you have provided,it looks like you have developed some eczematous skin condition causing itching on which you tend to develop boils because of scratching the area .
I would like to have a look at the exact skin condition.

Brief Answer:
Chronic skin eczema, needs change of habit

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I have seen the attached pictures .
You seem to have developed neurodermatitis.
This is basically a type of skin eczema which is associated with intense itching.
The most important aspect of treatment is that the affected person should completely avoid touching or scratching the area .This disease tends to increase by rubbing and scratching,so everytime a person itches ,it actually increases the disease.
Apply a topical steroid cream like cortisone cream over the lesion twice daily.
Take some oral antihistamines like Benadryl or levocetrizine along to relieve the associated itching and allergy .
Apply plenty of moisturisers or oil over the area two to three times daily to keep the area hydrated.

Hope it helps
