What Causes Reddish Discoloration Around Left Ankle And Tingling Sensation In Toes?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: Hi. I woke up this morning with a band of red spotted discoloring around my left ankle. It appears to be under the skin as there is no abrasion and is not painful to touch. A much smaller band is around my right ankle. I have tingling in both toes and when my legs are elevated, as when I am sitting and have them up on the couch. It's as if my toes and feet have a mild case of "falling asleep." Tingling has been occurring for aprox 2 months. I have put on apron 12 lbs in last year. I weigh 125lbs. I am 59, female and consider myself above average active for my age. Thank you. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Further examinations are needed;B complex vitamins advised to take...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. You are saying that you woke up this morning with a band of red spotted discoloring around your left ankle which appears under the skin. Can you please provide a photo, so it will be easier for me to assist your specifically? Thank you.

2. You are also reporting to have tingling in both toes and you feel like "falling asleep", symptoms which have been going on for 2 months now.

Tingling is a sign for nerve compression. An X-ray of the spinal cord (back area) and of knee and toes is advised to see if there are any changes in the structure of the related joints. Usually, arthritis or other rheumatological problems of these joints will give such problems.

Next, a thorough neurological examination is needed to understand at what extent your nerves have been affected and what can be done further.

3. Having put more weight is an aggravating factor to all problems including arthritis and tingling in toes. This is because of more pressure that would be put on your back (which might already have arthritis changes) and to the lower limbs.

4. Diabetes testing is advised to rule out diabetes as sometimes, diabetic neuropathy has the similar tinging problems as you are having now.

5. For the moment, until you run the recommended tests, I advise to:
- continue being as active as you are doing now
- do regular massage of the legs and toes with essential oils (lavender or olive oil) to help the nearby nerves "waking up" by external stimuli of massaging.
- take antiinflammatory medications orally and in case of pain, can apply analgesic cream locally
- start taking supplements containing B complex vitamins, calcium, magnesium, zinc, etc.

Hope it was of help!
