What Causes Reddish Sore On Bottom Lip?
I have had on my bottom lip, for about 2 days a red spot that is kinda sore. It is kinda located at the junction of my upper and bottom lips. I haven't really notice anything white, but I became quite paranoid as if it could be mouth thrush? What else could this be?
different possible causes
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
It is possible that it is oral thrush. This is one possibility.
There are other causes such as,some of the more common of these are: (1)other types of infections such as cold sore caused by oral herpes infection which is very common and can be found in the majority of the population or hand foot or mouth disease (would normally have rash elsewhere as well)
(2)trauma to the area
(3)anemia- deficiency of iron or the b vitamins can cause a soreness in this area (Angular cheilits)
(4)trauma to the area- braces, food, toothbrush
If it is thrush, you would need anti fungal treatment for it to resolve.
If it is related to oral herpes (mouth sores), it would resolve on its own.
If due to nutritional deficiency (resulting in anemia) then treatment of the anemia would be helpful.
If related to trauma, it will heal on its own
You can monitor for now and use oral anti septics/analgesic reagents to see if it helps or go to your doctor for assessment.
Examples are chloroseptic, diflam, covonia throat solutions
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
If this was thrush, does it necessarily mean something is really wrong with my health? Kinda getting paranoid with HIV, etc...
not necessarily related to HIV

HI
Oral herpes is very common. Some persons do not note the initial infection.
It is transmitted by contact with infected saliva, mucous membranes or skin contact.
Oral herpes does not mean a person has genital herpes, it can occur on its own.
In terms of thrush, this can occur in any circumstance of impaired immunity such as(1) a recent infection such cough or cold (or other infection) that has dampened the immune system
(2), use of immune suppressant medications such as steroids
(3)diabetes
(4)immune related diseases such as lupus
(5)oral hygiene related, trauma to the area
HIV is a risk factor for thrush but not the most common.
Please feel free to ask anything else
Also, for thrush to be HIV related, wouldn't it happen like 5-10 years down the road? Not like 4-6 months post exposure...?
yes, normally occurs a long time after exposure
Detailed Answer:
HI
The mucus in the throat is post nasal drip which can occur in response to an acute infection (cold, flu, sinusitis) or allergies.
It is treated with topical steroid nasal sprays and oral antihistamines. This is a wide spread problem.
It is not likely related.
In HIV, thrush is one of the later symptoms. Most symptoms occur a long time after exposure because the immune system continues to decline.
If you had a risky exposure, you may want to consider screening for this and the other STI ( hepatitis B, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis)
