What Causes Redness And Swelling On The Nose?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: Around 12 hours ago, before going to sleep, I accidentally walked straight into a wall and bruised my nose. I put ice immediately on the bridge area and the whole nose for about 10 minutes with very short breaks. Today after waking up I noticed the nose is a little swollen where it hit the wall and looks slightly different. there's a slight feeling of pain when touching the upper front of the nose, under the bridge, Exactly where it hit the wall. No pain at all when touching or pressing the sides of the nose nor the bottom of it. No pain when pressing the bridge as well. There is some slight pain where it got hit when moving my face or smiling for example. Will this swelling disappear? should I go see a doctor?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry, however continue ice compression for another 2-3 days..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome to HCM,

I've gone through your query and understand your concern,

Yes I've seen these images and appreciate the redness and a mild swelling (it's expected after this type of injury) over the bridge of nose ..

I'd suggest to put the ice compression several times a day for next 2-3 days, it should be sufficient to reduce the swelling and tightness of the area..

For slight pain no need for any pain killers, but if it's bothering you then you can take Tab Paracetamol 650 mg two to three times a day after food for next 1-2 days, it'll be sufficient..

No need to go see a doctor as of now, but if you notice any sudden severe headache/bleeding from nose/dizziness/nausea/vomiting (very unlikely though), then get yourself checked by any local physician(pref. ENT specialist, if available nearby)..

Don't worry, as with this type of injury, it should be subsided within few days only(3-4 days at the max)..

Hey again Doctor Banerjee. Sorry for late reply there was a technical problem with the app. Last question is it ok to smoke cigarettes?

Hello Dr. Banerjee and thanks for the detailed explanation. One small question, should three times a day of 10 minutes each with ice on nose be enough?
