What Causes Redness Around Pubic Area?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: I have a four year old daughter with redness around the anus and labia. This I noticed about four-five days ago but didn't think much of it - just typical irritation that toddler sometimes gets. Yesterday (2-3 days later), she suddenly got a raised rash (separate approx. 0.5 cm (in diameter) pink spots with a red head the size of a pen ball point (about 40 spots running above the pubic area in about a 5 cm wide 'belt' of a length of about 20 cm). This morning an additional 8 spots appeared on chest. No change in their appearance has occurred. I suspected chicken pox but nurse at clinic stated it did not look typical for chicken pox and said it is probably a viral infection (I did not mention the anal genital redness). Now when bathing her I see that the redness of the anal and genital area is not lessening. This has made me suspect that these symptoms are related. No fever, no itching, burning, full of energy, appetite might be slightly down but does eat when asked to and is drinking fluids, sleeps well. Also has moderate nasal congestion (3rd day). No chicken pox reported at her pre school now.
What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Looks are like viral illness

Detailed Answer:
Hi I'm Dr Suresh K Yadav MD(paediatrics) , I have gone through your question and understand your concerns,

Looks like viral illness with rash . As informed by you no fever , no itching ,baby is active I do not think it needs any active treatment other then see evolution of sign and symptoms to reach a diagnosis or disappearance of self limited viral illness lesions.

Does not look like chickenpox.

Diagnosis in skin lesions is best made by visual inspection, can you send images of lesions on chest.

If lesions increase ,persists or baby otherwise appears sick you need to consult your health care provider to reach a diagnosis and treatment accordingly.

Hope this answers your query. If any more question or follow up query do right to us. I will be happy to answer your question.
Take care.
Thanks
