What Causes Redness On The Forearm After Being Bitten By A Cat?
Question: Cat bite at Vet's at 9:30 a.m. yesterday. Immediately washed wounds with surgical scrub soap at Vet's. Bite marks were on the padded part of the hand at the base of the right thumb. At home, swabbed wounds with rubbing alcohol and put bandaid on area. Later applied Neosporin and left wounds open. Today, at 4:30 p.m., wound area is getting red and the inside (palm side) of wrist has become swollen and pink about 4 inches up the forearm. Should we proceed immediately to the Emergency Room?
Brief Answer:
Should go immediately to ER.
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Noted the history well and understood the concerns.
Since the wound area is getting reddened, inside of the wrist has become swollen and extended to 4 inches at the forearm indicates that the infection due to cat bite has settled in.
Hence I would advise you to go to ER immediately to get an appropriate treatment with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications in Tetanus toxoid booster and further care as may be prevalent/in practice in your area.
Continue the treatment as advised till you get cured.
