What Causes Right-sided Flank Pain?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I am a 42 year old european woman living in South XXXXXXX Saturday at 4am I woke up with intense pain in my right flank. At about 10am I went to the emergency room at a local hospital that is very well regarded. worried about appendicitis. I was seen at about 12:00 by which time the pain was extreme This was the height of the pain, I was doubled over. The doctor ruled out appendicitis in his physical exam. He thought it was renal colic.

They did a blood test which came back "perfect" and an ultrasound which showed nothing. No urinalysis was done. The doctor said maybe it was gas pain and sent me home.

It is now Monday night and I am still experiencing intense pain in my right flank, which is now more tender to the touch than before. I am taking 500mg of parecetemol 3x day and this makes the pain tolerable--it is uncomfortable but tolerable. I have no fever and no urinary symptoms. Other than the flank pain, I feel fine. About 3 weeks ago I had a UTI that was successfully treated with antibiotics. I am not pregnant (I'm in fertility treatment and currently on birth control pills). I am otherwise really healthy and there's no family history of renal problems.

Should I go back to the hospital for a second opinion? Is this pain consistent with kidney stones? Would it be possible to have appendicitis with a "perfect" blood analysis and no fever? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Looks like kidney stones only

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

The pain in the right flanks could be due to appendicitis or due to ureteric colic (kidney stones).
It is less likely to be appendicitis as the blood report is normal and there is no fever.

You can get a second opinion to rule out kidney stones. You can repeat the ultrasound scan or get a Ct scan of the KUB region.

Meanwhile you can take T.ultracet for relief.

I hope that answers your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr.R.K.
