What Causes Right-sided Pain In Abdomen After Gall Bladder Removal?

Question: Hi, I was having a pain in my lower right side and had my gall bladder removed due to surge and gall stones in October of this year. I am still having the pain and a gastreologist saw on my MRI an annular pancreas. Could this be the reason I am still having the pain, and if so what type of doctor should I see?

Brief Answer:
Only if it has caused pancreatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

Annular pancreas as such doesn't cause any pain. It is likely to cause pancreatitis or press duodenum. In these case it may cause pain.

If pressing duodenum that will be shown in MRI. In pancreatitis the pain will be more in middle . In your case it is unlikely that annular pancreas is causing any problem.

For pain abdomen surgical gastroenterologist is the super specialist consulted. As you have already shown him you may change to another gastroenterologist. Still more precise for pancreas are hepatobiliary surgeons.

One possibility is that after Gall bladder removal usually fat metabolism is hampered. So whenever fat is taken there will be increased intestinal movement and pain.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Thank you very much Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Just one more thing, if I lie down on my back, I feel the pain in the lower middle of my back and if I lie on my right side, the pain is there. There is also something I can feel there like a big knot. Does this make a difference?

Brief Answer:
Suggest more of intestinal pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for late reply.

Your symptoms suggest the pain is probably arising from the intestine hyper motility.

I usually suggest my patients with such complaints to get CT scan abdomen . If nothing significant comes then only fat indigestion will be treated. You may discuss this with your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for your responses. They are very helpful. Before I had my gall bladder removed, I had my intestines on my right side removed due to a flat polyp. For the fat indigestion would you have any recommendations as to how to treat?

Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
Needs to do diet adjustment

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Let me tell you in brief what exactly is happening. Normal gall bladder store bile and release when you eat fatty foods. After removal of gall bladder there is no storage and bile continuously come to intestine.

So when you eat fatty foods there won't be adequate bile. Only little bile will be there. This cause pain and bloating or even diarrhoea.

I suggest you some diet modifications which will help like
- reduce intake of fried items and high fatty items
- Go for low fat or fat free foods .
- eat less amount of fat at a time so that it will be easy to digest.
-take frequent small meals like 3 main meals and 2 snacks inbetween in little quantity.
-increase fiber content of the food. Either you can go for green vegetables or fiber supplements . Increase slowly.
-increase protein intake in foods.

Usually for my patients I won't advice bile supplements as they don't have much role and may cause diarrhoea also.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.
