What Causes Right Sided Pain On The Forehead?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Feb 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,
Starting from April last year 2016, I started getting some pain on the right side of the forehead. Slowly that pain started occuring around right hand side and little bit on top of the head as shown in the attached picture. I feel this pain more when I pull my hairs back from that location and pains when I touch that location. This happened for 3-4 months and went away in between when i got Chocken pox and I took lots of fever reducing tablets, This pain again started in December, 2016. I am afraid if this can be Skull Osteomyelitis or Meningitis?
I feel better when my hairs are soft. Also, sometimes my right ear become very hot when I becomes anxious due to some reason. My primary doctor did some regular blood tests and said it could be because of sinus and there is nothing serious to worry.

Brief Answer:
It can be post herpatic neuralgia

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, it can post herpatic neuralgia. The signs doesn't associate with features of meningitis and skull osteomyelitis is too early to be diagnosed like this and with clear history of recent chicken pox and pain mostly topical with local tenderness and pulling hair, it favors very much towards diagnosis of post herpatic neuralgia of ophthalmic division of trigeminal nerve and it can even present without rash or vesicles at start or even when it's completely resolved.

It may need neurological examination alongwith local eye examination as well as basic blood screens like blood count and ESR as well as CRP. Local analgesics like Ibuprofen or capsaicin and local anesthetic patches may be needed.

More potent analgesics and nerve pain suppressants like gaba pentins or duloxetine can be helpful.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for the advice.
I am little confused as the problem started in April 2016 and Chickenpox happened after 5 months in August 2016. Then can it still be Post herpatic neuralgia? Also, My wife is pregnant as of now so can there be any risk to the baby as she became pregnant in last week of December 2016. Chickenpox happened in August 2016 and I recovered from it by October 2016.

Brief Answer:
Baby isn't on risk and it's possible to have it in these circumstances

Detailed Answer:
Hi!
Thanks for sharing the details.

Sometimes the burning or parasthesias set in before onset of rash of herpes zoster and rash may appear there after. It's also possible to have a generalized rash of chicken pox apart from herpes zoster of the affected dermatome but findings are so much related that the possibility of herpes can't be ruled out. As far as issue to the child is concerned, it doesn't transmit the way you mean to ask. Only genital herpes transmit to the partner from where it can be transmitted to newborn but for that partner usually exhibits the rash too. In your case no clue of genital herpes has been found yet.

Regards.
