What Causes Right Sided Upper Abdominal Pain?

Posted on Wed, 25 May 2016
Question: This is a long one... When i was pregnant i had cholestasis. Now two years later i am still having some right sided pain. I went to my dr last week and he gave me a req for cbc, renal, ca, mg, phos, lft's, vit d, vit b, ck, iron, bilirubin, cholesterol and thats it. It all came back perfect, except i didnt have my cholesterol tested because i wasnt fasting. Last week i got a uti and started a course of antibiotics but never finished as i missed two days (i know thats not good). Today i had an abdominal ultrasound and asked the tech what she looks at, and she replied the usual spleen, liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. So while she was doing the ultrasound she looked hard at my gallbladder (which i expected goven my history and pain) and rt kidney. Then they scanned my bladder, which is not routine. They didnt stay long at my bladder took one quick picture and continued with the scan. The radiologist didnt come in to the room and i didnt have to wait gor the radiologist to review my scan before leaving like i have before when the issue arose while pregnant. They told me to see my dr for results in a week for sure, and now im freaked out. I know you would have no idea what the issue would be but from this information does it seem as though that this is life threatning. My anxiety is theough the roof, all i am looking for is some
Suggestions of likely outcomes... Like if they thought i had cancer could they just leave it for a week for my family dr to deal with?

Hi there,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.

It is unlikely to be anything serious including cancer. In that case they would have informed you and discussed with you the treatment plan.

1. Since when are you having right side abdominal pain?
2. Is it upper or lower abdominal?
3. Does it affect you sleep?
4. Burning urination?
5. White discharge?
6. Are your bowel movements normal?

Regards,
Dr.Barani

Brief Answer:
Answer given below

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Welcome back to HCM,

Though itching of feet and pain in the upper right quadrant radiating to right shoulder can occur with gallbladder and gallstone disease, the itching is less likely to be the cause in your case as the blood tests including bilirubin are normal.

Right upper quadrant pain can occur even in acid peptic disease and the burps you have may point towards that only.

You can start taking Cap Nexium 40 mg Once Daily 30 min before breakfast for relief.
Further treatment plan can be done after seeing the ultrasound scan report.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Regards,
Dr.Barani

Do you have any idea why they would have scanned my bladder after my kidney?

Brief Answer:
No specific reason

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Welcome back,

There is no specific reason why the urinary bladder was scanned after kidneys. Probably they wanted to see if the kidneys are draining properly and after drainage the urine got collected appropriate fashion.

However both of them form part of urinary tract and are included in the routine ultrasonography.

Dr.Barani
