What Causes Scab And Sore Head In A 5 Year Old?
Question: My 5 year old son has a sore on his head that has a type of crystallised scab on it. He has just one now but had 2 before and they went away. Do you know what this might be.
Brief Answer:
could be folliculitis or impetigo
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
The image and description fit into either folliculitis or impetigo.
Folliculitis is infection of hair follicle and impetigo is infection of skin.
Both are caused by bacterial infection.
If your child already had 2 of them and now this is the third one, I would advise you to put antiseptic ointment like fusidic acid. This has to be applied twice daily for atleast 5 days.
Taking weekly headbath with good shampoo will prevent it from recurring. Ensure you use antiseptic soap for the body too.
Wishing your child good health
