Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: I have been purging stool 6 times since this morning. Stool is semi solid and coming out with a bit wind. Looks like food is not completely digested. But there is no pain. Feeling week and getting sweat. I am a diabetic. Please advise the medicine.

Brief Answer:
You need Prescription based antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

This is a classical history of semisolid stools with winds, 6 since morning, undigested- No pain ( tenesmus as we say),

But the weakness and getting ''sweats''- is an indication of an active infection by a typical bacteria that may not give fever ans may mislead the patient and/ or Doctor.
Since you are a diabetic you need to go for investigations and antibiotic treatment
ASAP.

No chances should be taken in a patient with diabetes.
I would advise:
Blood investigations for hemogram- WBC count, urea and creatinine, blood sugar charting 6 hourly- urine and stool test. Stool culture and sensitivity helps if you have not already started to take antibiotic.

Consult a Doctor for advising these tests and watch for the vitals ( Temperature / pulse/ Respiration and BP) and for a prescription for antibiotics and decision whether you need to take oral or intravenous antibiotics.

(I am so sorry , I can not write any ''need-a-prescription'' based antibiotic here).
Take plenty or oral fluid - water. ORS= Electral solution be best avoided as it contains sugar too. Doctor may have to adjust your dosage for diabetes as per the sugar levels.

Since you have not mentioned about nausea or vomiting- a good sign, you can certainly take a soft bland diet.

Dear doctor,

Thanks for your quick response. Though I am a diabetic, my diabetis is under full control. I am taking 500mg Metformin a day. My HB1AC is around 6 in the recent tests done. Please advise should I really go for full check or shall I go for antibiotic. There is sweating but it is not very high.

Brief Answer:
Go for antibiotics as that heals

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Nice to know Diabetes is well under control
Please start the antibiotics immediately .
Check up later on .
Sweating is to be bothered for a simple reason as I said for knowing the possibility of gram negative problem Which your Doctor would definitely think of.
