What Causes Severe Abdominal Bloating, Back Pain And Headache After Mirena IUD Removal?

Question: What severe reactions have been reported with Mirena IUDs? Do they go away if it is removed?
I have a friend that has what she calls bloating with abdominal and back pain. She is also having breast tenderness and a discharge from one nipple. She Has almost constant severs headaches. She has had Mirena since March I believe.

Yes,Mirena can cause these!

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Mirena contains hormones and can be responsible for this. This is even more likely if these symptoms all started after receiving the IUD. I will suggest that this should be removed and another method of contraception used. Should the symptoms regress, then that is the diagnosis and we should no longer use it. If it doesn’t, at that time only will i recommend aggressive medical intervention.
