Question: You I have been suffering from abdominal cramping (spasms on waking up) mucus in stools, fishy smelling mucus (for about two weeks) when passing gas, stinging pain in my rectum. I have been to doctor and had blood tests for blood count and ovarian test which were both normal. I am doing a FOB test. All this has been going on for around 7 weeks.

Brief Answer:
Looks to be procto-colitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Female/60 - abdominal problem for 7 weeks - spasms on waking up - mucus in stool - fishy smelling mucus when passing gas for about 2 weeks - stinging pain in rectum - consulted a Doctor - blood and ovarian tests - normal - FOB ...

Your history is suggestive of procto-colitis.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Complete Stool test.
A course of an antibiotic and Metronidazole.
Colonoscopy to find the exact causes of the symptoms that you have.
CT scan if required after preliminary Ultrasound of the whole abdomen.

This way, a proper diagnosis and management can be done.
I hope this answer helps you an early diagnosis and proper management as per the cause thus found.

I hope, this answer helps you, please free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Thank you. Would a virtual colon CT scan (less invasive) be as effective as a Colonoscopy?

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your appreciation.
Virtual colonoscopy has some limitation:
No actual view of the mucosa
Can no do biopsy.
Small lesions easily missed.
Hence actual colonoscopy should be done, particularly with the symptoms that you have.
