Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/79 - GB Surgery on Sat - came home on Sunday - lower back hurts since he has gotten home - wants to know the reason.
Please give some additional information:
I hope this was Lap or Robot Surgery.
For how long the surgery continued?
Does the movement of trunk causes increase in pain?
Please palpate over the painful are and see it the muscles are tight/in spasm, tender to touch/pressure.
Any other medications?
Does Ibuprofen suit him?
Usually any type of Gall bladder surgery does not cause any lower back ache in usual circumstances.
The most probable reason I can think of is myalgia due to strain or muscle spasms.
Pain and spasm go hand-in-hand, increasing each other.
You may please apply any Rubefacient liniment so that the muscles get relaxed, continue the painkillers, local hot fomentation.
Sort of a bed rest to relax muscles.
Awaiting for your feedback.
With Regards.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Looks to be more of muscular origin.
Please follow the above advise.
Give Ibuprofen or so if it suits him.
If no relief, it is better to get a clinical evaluation done and further investigations and management if needed.
