What Causes Severe Bouts Of Diarrhea After Eating?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: Experiencing severe bouts of diarrhea about 30 minutes after eating. This seems to happen about every OTHER day and is accompanied by extreme abdominal pain. The diarrhea has heavy orange/red mucous clots throughout. The day following the bouts of diarrhea, I feel constipated, and when I finally am able to go, I see that I have passed what looks like a rope/mucous worm about 6-8 inches long and nothing else. This has happened about 4-5 times in the last 2 weeks. On one occasion, after I had diarrhea, the toilet bowel was completely filled with blood. It looked like tomato soup... I also have noticed that my stomach is very distended, and hurts to the touch. I saw my gastroenterologist a month prior with same complaint, less the blood and stomach being distended, and he told me to eat more fiber... Is this an emergency situation? I am due back to see him in 2 weeks.

Brief Answer:
Consult your Primary Care physician if symptoms worsen

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day

Dear Sir

If the following criteria are fulfilled it is unlikely to be emergency

1. Absence vomiting
2. Rest of abdomen is soft to touch and non tender
3. Passage of stools regularly
4. Absence of Fever and loss of appetite

If you notice any of the following then do consult your Primary Care physician

1. Abdominal distension and tenderness increases or persist

2. Appearance of vomiting

The color of stools depends on many factors including the type of food consumed. If your Gastroenterolgist has thoroughly examined you for local pathology like anal fissure and hemorrhoid and they have been ruled out then there is no cause for concern.

In the meantime I would suggest you the following

1. Ensure good intake of water : 2 to 3 liter a day

2. High fiber diet : 2 servings of vegetable salad and 2 servings of fruits especially citrus fruit will ensure adequate intake of fiber in diet.

3. Acid Suppressant like Pantoprozole will help relieve pain by acid suppressant action.

4. Deworming with antihelmenthic like Albendazole will be helpful.

5. Anti flatulent antacid containing Simethicone will be helpful

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care
