What Causes Severe Chest Pain After MRI Procedure?
Question: I get severe chest pain every time I have an MRI. Lasts for around 36 hours. I have degenerative disk disease, osteoarthritis of the spine, spinal stenosis, costochondritis, radicular neuropathy and myositis. Is it caused by the vibration from the scanner?
Brief Answer:
Unknown
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.
you have been experiencing chest pain after having an MRI. Did you have contract material injected into you for the scan? If you did could this be a reaction to the contract material? If not then I have no explanation for your pain. The MRI is using powerful magnets to see inside your body and would have no effect to tissues or cause pain.
In summary
1. pain from contrast material?
2. Pain cause unknown
I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any further questions.

No XXXXXXX used, although I am allergic to some of these. It has happened with neck MRIs and also recent nknee MRI. I am hypersensitive to vibration, though, and have lost muscle control after using lawn care devices that vibrate. I suppose it could be the result of lying on my back as doing so causes me to lose feeling in my hands and sometimes my feet unless in cervical collar.
Brief Answer:
Vibration pain
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for returning to HCM. Yes I agree with you that the pain is more than likely from laying or from the vibrations. I night recommend prior to your next MRI that you take a pain pill like tylenol or ibuprofen before the MRI. That way you may get ahead of the pain.
Good luck in your future
