default
Posted on Fri, 20 May 2016
Question: I have been coughing a lot today ( from a cold) and just experienced blurred and double vision. it was not directly after a coughing spell, and it lasted for about ten minutes. if I closed one eye (either one) my vision cleared. I have never experienced blurred or double vision before, although I do wear glasses. is this anything to worry about?

Brief Answer:
Diplopia

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description, double vision can be due to a number of causes including diabetic neuropathy, graves disease, myasthenia gravis or injury to one of the eye muscles. If the diplopia or double vision was transient (10 minutes) and did not recur then most likely its not a serious cause. Blood pressure and blood sugar changes along with poor visual acuity can contribute to this too. You can consult your GP for a general assessment. However, if this recurs then a neurological and ENT exam, blood counts, BP, blood sugar should be done. An ophthalmologist should be consulted in this regard if the diplopia recurs or persists.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
