What Causes Severe Itching Around The Labia In An Elderly Person?
Question: my mother in law is 91 and is bothered by severe itching in her labia. treatment with otc mycostatin has not helped. what could be some other issues/answers/ Thank you
Brief Answer:
possible causes
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
Vaginal itching can be caused by yeast, bacteria, allergies and vaginal dryness. She probably needs to see a doctor for an exam and evaluation.
If it is yeast she would likely have a thick white vaginal discharge.
if it is bacterial she may have a yellow to green discharge and bad odor.
If the area is just dry (common in older women) this is called atrophic vaginitis and is treated with topical estrogen cream.
Allergies are least likely but make sure she does not have new clothing or new personal creams or lotions that she is using.
