Question: I am 35 weeks pregnant with DCDA twins. Last four weeks i have severe itching on my hands and legs during night time and some times day time also. First my doctor suggest cetirizine tablet daily one for 5 days. If cetirizine tablet affect the babies. After 5 days also my itching is not cure. Again I consult the doctor. Doctor advice for blood test for bilirubin level. My result is bilirubin T – 1.9 , D – 0.3 ,D – 1.1 ,and doctor suggest ursodeoxycholic acid tablets 150 mg for three times daily up to 15 days. After 15 days during visit another test to be done and doctor told me that if required lever scan also to be done. Is it dangerous if bilirubin level is high. I search in net it is harmful for babies. Is it safe delivery of babies before 38weeks.If more than 38weeks what happen.ursodeoxycholic acid tablets 150 mg for three times is it safe for babies. Please advice me .Other blood results are in normal range . Hemoglobin -12.5 ,My BP is 110/70 and sugar level during fasting 82 and PP – 115.Urine albumin test and sugar test also nil.

Brief Answer:
To monitor bilirubin levels

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your worry about increasing bilirubin values.

This is common problem seen during twin pregnancy due to compression of bile duct and slow metabolism of bilirubin.

You need to continue ursodeoxycholic acid tablets till your bilirubin levels are under control. These tablets are not harmful for babies.

If bilirubin levels shoot up , it could be a problem and need to terminate pregnancy before 38 weeks.

Get liver ultrasound scan done. repeat bilirubin levels frequently and stay in touch with your physician.
