What Causes Severe Lower Abdominal Pain In An Arthritis Patient?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Jul 2016
Question: I am a 49 yo female who over the last few days have had increasing pain in my lower abdomin, I am post menopausal, I have MS, Rheauatoid Arthritis and liver disease due to the amount of medications I have taken over the the last 30 years. It feels like consitipation, however, I have had a bowel movement in last 48 hours and am passing gas therefore I do not believe it is a GI Block. I would like to know if I should just take a laxative or if this a potantial serious condtion that requires a trip to the emergency department. I would like to avoid this as I am an employee at this hospital. Any suggestions?

I am noticing that the pain is now going to my lower back as well, getting worse.

There is also bloating and pain, although constant worse when I move.

Forgot to mention buldging veins

Brief Answer:
Pain in lower abdomen / Under Evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans- Pain in lower abdomen / Under Evaluation

Hi,Dear!! Thanks for the query to HCM.
Read and reviewed the query in context to your health issues, which are
-Increasing frequency of pain in lower abdomen.
-with pain going down to your back and getting worst
-and pain worst on movement, along with bloating.
-and bulging veins
More details would be needed about bulging veins, for exploring further suggestions in your case.

My Impression-
In the given scenario,You seem to suffer from-?IBS(Irritable Bowel Syndrome) with C(Constipation)
In view of the accompanying liver disease, possibility of accompanying gall stones needs to be ruled out
For this I would suggest you to check with Surgeon and to rule out kidney stone, after needful physical and lab investigations.

Do's Suggested-
Keep Nil by mouth.
Be on fluids for a day.
See if pains resolve.
If no relief take antispasmodic medicines.
If pain resolves, you can carry on without visit to ER .
If pains increase still, go to ER to rule out ?gall bladder? kidney stones and to treat it accordingly.

Cause of increasing pains?
Ans-In the given scenario, the cause seems to be due to bloated stomach with accompanied undetected IBS with accompanied Constipation.
Or it could be also be from undetected gall/ or kidney stones, which need to be ruled by further investigations.

Hope this reply would reduce worries with your health issues and would help you to plan further proper care, with help of doctors there.
