What Causes Severe Mood Swings And Anger?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: My partner has problems to manage her anger, it can be a minor reason and she can get in rage, wants to smash things and turns frightening to do some harm to her or myself.
I wonder where her abrupt mood change comes from good to very bad in a fraction of seconds. Could it come from depression, menopause or her gambling addiction? Would you recommend Valium as a preventive medication?

Brief Answer:
No.Valium is a sedative drug.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

According to me this can be initial stages of mania. Depression is ruled out since rage/hyperactivity is unlikely. I will need a thorough examination after a detailed history to identify the root cause. It may not be related due to gambling addiction or menopause. I think your partner needs to be started on mild dose of anti mania medications and not valium.
I would not recommend Valium since it is a sedative.

Could you tell me how frequently these episodes occur per week?
Since how long is she facing this difficulty?

She had a very hard life and has been used and abused by previous partners.
She reacted to get into drinking and got more angry, got into gambling to find moments of happiness. In accelerated arguments she smashed things and bit her partner badly. Otherwise she has a lovely personality and she has a good heart.
I feel committed to help her to overcome her bad mood problems.
When she shows signs of wanting to start arguments I keep cam and try to defuse the situation. Next day she feels sorry, we can discuss the problem quietly and she apologizes I know she does not want to hurt me. The mood swing can happen within moments. I try by conversation to find the roots what causes the eruptions of anger. But if there is a medicine with no bad side effects it would assist me to help her. I would very much appreciate your help. Kind Regards XXXX

To answer your question: The episodes can happen twice a week and she can be okay for two weeks. But she has this problems for all her life and started when she was a small girl when she could smash cats to death on the floor or against a wall and she can not explain why she did that. She never could do this again as she loves all animals. She has lost her mother when she was still a child and her father had a hard time to control her in her childhood and might have used methods to contain her which we could call cruel. When she gets angry she fights like a tiger and she bit her first husband who was a policeman. She is not frightened of anything.

Brief Answer:
Suggest CBT with mild dose of anti maniac drug

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.Thanks for writing back.

I have thoroughly read your query and deeply appreciate your concern for her. Thanks for sharing a detailed history.

I feel her childhood would have been much if she was brought up by both her parents. Currently though she behaves in a similar manner this is exaggerated due to the unfaithful partners and would have resulted in post traumatic stress disorder leading to initial stages of mania.

I were to do counselling (cognitive and behavioral therapy) and start on mild doses on anti maniac medication. Since most of these medications have to be titered according to the response obtained it is difficult to write a prescription online.

Surely these medications are good & results are praiseworthy with proper followup and compliance with negligible/ few tolerable side effects.

Hope you completely understand. She shall get well soon.
