What Causes Severe Pain In Legs, groin Area, Back, Shoulders And Arms?

Question: APPROX. 1 YEAR AGO WAS DIAGNOSED THRU LAB WORK WITH RA. I had a sudden, rather severe attach of pain to my body effecting my legs, feet, groin area, back, shoulders arms wrists and substancial amt of swelling in the hands. I have since been unable to see an RA Dr. due to Obama Care Ins. delays on apprvls. for addtl tests. I am currently taking 60mg. of prednisone each day with 600 mg ibuprofen (just as needed) Since the first sever attach, the flare ups have not been as intense, however I also was diagnosed with osteoarthritis (some years ago) Curviture of the spine (when I was a teen) and the one and only bone density test done on me was about twenty years ago. The results were not good than. Due to this problem with my Insurance my dr. has not been able to get approval frm them for me to see a RA Dr. or get a more current bone density test (in order to see if their are more issues that he should be concerned with. Meanwhile, he really doesn't want to experiment with different treatments, due to multiple other health issues that we have discussed. I was recently switched to the prednisone just this past week, after dicovering the medication Hydroxychloroquine 400mg per day was not only not working (after taking it approx. 1 mo) from the time I started taking it until stopping it on 8-16 after seeing an er Dr dx was Anxiety along with adverse drug reaction. This Dr said I was experiencing every side effect that can potentially come with that drug. Plz advise

Dear Madam ,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that you dont need to take prednisolone regularly for rheumatoid arthritis . There are other drugs that should be tried.

I believe that you have been rightly diagnosed as RA then we should first try methotrexate in a once weekly dose which is the most successful treatment for RA . If it doesnt work then other drugs like leflunomide can be added . If Hydoxychloroquine doesnt suit you its fine then you need not take it.

Rather then ibuprofen try out etoricoxib which are more stomach friendly . Since you already suffer from low bone mineral density prednisolone is just going to make it worse . It will result in osteoporosis . It is used generally to tide over flares not to be used regularly . Also start taking calcium and vitamin D supplements.

Take care.

Dr. Shruti
