What Causes Severe Stomach Pain With The History Of IBS?

Question: I have been suffering from a lot of stomach pain for at least 10 days. I have been to Boots and they suggested gaviscon, which I have been using now for 4 days. It is no better. I have irritable bowel syndrome which I control with diet, but that is not working at the moment, but the pain is higher up than that, just under the ribs. It is keeping me awake at night. What do you suggest.

Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of known irritable bowel syndrome which you control with diet - stomach pain just under ribs for 10 days - not relieved by Gaviscon - pain keeping you awake at night.

I would suggest you the following:

Also take PPI like Omeprazole.
Anti-spasmodic like Dicyclomin
Ultrasonography of the abdomen to rule out gall bladder, liver and spleen related problems.
Upper GI endoscopy if gastritis or ulcer is suspected.
Clinical evaluation by a Doctor as you are suffering for the last 10 days and further investigations as per the examination, like tests of blood, urine and stool.

Please let me know additional information:
- Is there any changes in stool and/or urine?
- Any associated symptoms like bloating, nausea, vomiting, constipation or loose stools?
- What is the type of pain: like burning, twisting, throbbing?
- Any other associated symptoms?
- Any referred pain to the back?

Here it is.

I do have bloating, nausea, loose stools and sometimes constipation, but that is not unusual for me.
Sometimes referred pain to my back.
