What Causes Sharp Stabbing Pain In Neck Radiating To Head?

default
Posted on Sat, 7 Nov 2015
Question: Lately, I have been having a very sharp stabbing pain going up from the back of my neck up to my brain. I had it on three different occassions. Last time it came on after I bent down to put on my socks. After the sharp pain subsides, I am left with a lingering headache that lasts for days. When I get this pain, I feel very nauseaus too. What could possibly be causing this to happen?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to a pinched nerve from a cervical disc prolapse.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.

Your pain is suggestive of a pinched nerve in the neck as it comes out of the spinal canal in the neck. This is usually from a disc prolapse in the neck region. This may not be seen on a plain xray of the neck but may be visible on a MRI of the cervical spine.
