What Causes Shoulder And Neck Pain While Lying Down And Fatigue?

Question: Good Afternoon and thank you for reading my question. For the past 2 months, I have experienced pain in my shoulder/neck when laying down. It usually dissipates within 2 hours of waking however, throughout the day I'll experience soreness or random pains in almost all of my joints (on and off). I'm also fatigued on most days. I went to my PCP a few weeks ago, she ran a variety of blood tests (including lyme, RA, thyroid etc) all were normal except I had an elevated Sed Rate (33mm). To be certain my Dr has referred me to a rheumotologist, but the soonest appointment is 4 weeks away. Can you please offer some input?

Hi,
Thanks for writing back,
I have read you respose and your original history. And i will try to guide you in best possible way.
Here as you have mentioned your lab tests, there is no significant evidence of an autoimmune disease or rheumatic issue.
ESR can be high in patients which long standing allergies as you mentioned you have had allergy issues , this might be a cause of raised ESR.
ESR is always non specific.
One has to related it to other labs and clinical findings to give it some meaning.
As far as your symptoms are concerned there is a high suspicion thay you might have a rheumatic issue bacause you aunt had it plus
sometimes rheumatic issues manifest like this... pain..which settle with time... body aches...specially migratory... these pains migrate from one joint to the other..
Though there is no clear evidence that you are having an autoimmune or rheumatic issue but your doctor did well to opt for an opinion ..
If rheumatic issues are ruled out then your pains might be simple body aches which can be caused by general lethargy, muscle spasms, electrolyte issues, bone pains, general weakness.
In such case only some vitamine and calcium vitamine D supplementation and electrolyte replacement help.
Physiotherapy helps too.
Suggestions:
1) Don't panic things will be alright.
2) Don' t take high pillow while sleeping.
3) When you sit keep your neck at some rest.
4) You can take tylenol for the time being for pains.
5) You can apply Voltral gel to your neck this will make you feel relieved.
6) There is always an option to use good over the counter supplements like a daily tab for Centrum. A dsily tab of calcium vitamin D ..they usually benefit one.
7) Wait for rheumatology appointment i hope you don't have any issues and every things gets ruled out
Till then dont panic hope for the best , and I want to assure you that things seem controllable and treatable only some time is needed.
Stay blessed.
Regards.
Dr.Muhammad Ahmad.
