What Causes Sleeplessness In An Infant?

Posted on Thu, 3 Dec 2015
Question: Hello Dr,

We are blessed with a baby girl 45days ago. 3days back Vaseline Injection is done for the baby as suggested by Dr.
Today is the 3rd day after injection. She is not at all sleeping, from 6:00 AM till now almost 10:30PM, she didnt sleep for even 15min continuously.
Mother is not able to fullfill the milk needs, as per Dr advice we started giving NanPro1 from yesterday. Previous to that we gave Cow milk but Dr adviced to stop the cow milk. so we are not sure why she is not getting sleep.
Today 48th day, my baby weight is too too low, she is 3kg only(this is same weight when she is born).
Also she didnt go for motion till now.
We are so much afraid on what to do next.
Your feedback will be much more appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Details below

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

I can understand your concern.
I would like to know whether she is accepting the formula feed or not.I agree with your doctor as cow milk should be avoided in babies below one year of age. This could be the cause of poor weight gain.
Vaccination can cause fever and baby may not be comfortable due to the fever or pain. But as already 3 days has been passed, vaccination as a cause of this discomfort is highly unlikely.
I would like to know if the baby is crying persistently.
Persistent and excessive cry after vaccination can be due to the complication of vaccine and in this case I would like to get her evaluated by a pediatrician.Sometimes pain due to mosquito/insect bite or even colic causes much discomfort so that baby could not get sleep. In such condition giving paracetamol drop and/or colic drop provides relief.
Please provide the details so that I better able to help you out.

thanks for the quick reply..
she is accepting in the sense like after having the formula feed, she is quit and stopped crying also.
But I'm not sure her body accepts its or not. How to determine that??
She want to take milk continuously from her mother and want to sleep with the nipples in her mouth, after she sleep properly while feeding the moment we take it nipples out and put in bed within 5min she started crying. Also we observe some kind of discomfort in her body, not sure its is due to formla feed or not. Something like the formula feed is too heavy like that.

We feed 60ml(11AM) in the morning and 60ml(9PM) in the night. rest all the time we are feeding mothers milk only.

Hope this can help to give some clarifications
Thanks Dr

Brief Answer:
Continue the same and observe for urinary output

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back

I wont get worried if baby is quite and sleeping for about 1 hour after having formula feed.
Formula feed is usually tolerated well if made in proper dilution (one scoop in 30 ml of water).
Let her sleep beside mother if she is comfortable in that.Watch for urinary output(at least 4-6 times in 24 hours) as it is good indicator of adequate feeding.
I hope her sleep pattern will normalise within a day or two without any specific intervention.
Regards
