Question: My husband is a spinal cord injured vet for fifty years. The injury is T-12-L-1 level and is a bruised spinal cord. Two days ago he developed systems of a stroke,i.e., slurred speech, numbness in his arms, spasms in his legs, unable to think correctly or remember certain facts. He was examined by an emergency room Dr. which included, MRI, blood tests, urine sample. All symptoms pointed to a bladder infection. Antibiotics were prescribed and began doses. This morning, 36 hours later, his left arm is completely paralyzed , speech is still slurred, etc. Is this normal for a bladder infection diagnosis or is something happening with his old injury, (?) spinal cord involvement ? Where do we go from here?

Brief Answer:
These symptoms are suggestive of brain stroke.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir XXXXXXX Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted the medical details of your husband. His current symptoms are suggestive of brain stroke, which occurs due to lack of blood flow to a specific part of the brain. In this case, the blood supply seems to be reduced on the right side of brain (which would cause left arm weakness).

His MRI of brain should be repeated, along with MR angiogram. He should be started on aspirin and rosuvastatin. Physiotherapy should also be started. If BP and sugars are high, they should be brought under control.

His symptoms are not due to old spinal cord injury or bladder infection.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
